David moved slowly, taking his evening walk, as he always did, in the grounds of his Pretoria home. Above him were oak trees that had been planted a hundred years previously. He liked the sense of continuity they gave him, they reminded him of the length of time the white man had been dominant in South Africa.

David knew that all he had ever wanted was now within his grasp, less than a few weeks away. All he had to do was get the referendum over and done with. The bombing of the Rivonia police station and his tending to the dying black woman was the best publicity stunt he could have wished for.

He could offer the population security. And that was important, because the country was nervous. Unless the population supported the new security bill, the wave of violence would intensify.

David had always known that he could cut the correct profile with the overseas press. As an Englishman by descent, he knew he was more acceptable than an Afrikaner like Kobus van der Post.

David turned back to the house. His dream of becoming the most powerful man in Africa was close to fruition.
